What is biological control?
The phenomena in which pests of crops are managed and
control through introduction of natural enemy such as lady bird beetles (lady
Bugs).
Types of Biological Control:
There are three main types of Biological Control which are;
1) 1 Applied or manipulative:
This method is
capitalized on already present lady birds and other beneficial natural enemies
of pest, agricultural sprays such as Herbicides, Fungicides and Insecticide are
avoided to prevent damage to them.
2) 2 Augmentative:
In this method more lady birds beetles are
bought from commercial producer to full fill the needs as the existing lady
bird in the crops are few in numbers.
If
you buy lady bugs in adult stage there is high chances that they fly away from
the crops however if bought in larval stage and introduce to crop land, they
can’t fly and will eat the crop enemies.
In
the second case the larvae have to choose one choice of two, first to eat the
pest or starve to death.
Augmentative Biological Control
3) 3 Classical Biological control:
Also known as inoculative biological control, in this method lady bird
and others known` natural enemies are brought and allowed with hope to make a
colony and then eat the pest in the crops where exotic pests invaded.
In
this case the lady bugs may established or not; may control the pest or not.
